Lava Bug Character Design
The monster creation process began with the creation of silhouettes, some generated from random scribbles and others inspired by shapes found in nature. I then selected my six favorite to refine. While I liked a few of the designs in this stage, I gravitated towards the bug concept in the bottom right and chose this as my final design to refine further and paint.
Variations on the Bug
Final Design & Digital Painting
Once I settled on a silhouette and selected my favorite design aspects, I decided on what kind of environment my grub monster would live in. Some of the bumps on the back of the silhouette looked like crystals or rocks to me, so I began thinking about a cave bug. One of my classmates pointed out that they looked like geysers, and I instantly latched on to the idea of a lava bug that resides in the crust of the earth. I really wanted to focus on vibrant, contrasting colors in the digital painting to get across the feeling of molten lava.
